Check How to Install Microsoft Office on Linux

Switching from Microsoft Windows to Linux and its distributions is definitely not an easy task for all customers. Numerous users struggle to get used to undermining Linux, especially changes in the weather. If the vast majority of your work is based on the Microsoft Office suite and its applications such as Word, Excel and Presentation, it will not be easier for you to migrate to Linux.

Linux comes pre-installed with Libre Office, and you can do everything in it like you do in Microsoft Office, however, honestly speaking, it’s anything but Microsoft Office. Libre Office or Open Office just don’t give you that feeling and comfort of removing a setup from Microsoft Office applications. Before it was difficult to install and use Microsoft Office on Linux, but now it is possible and very easy to do. We can use applications like WINE and Play On Linux to install and use Microsoft Office on Linux.

How to install Microsoft Office on Linux

You have three ways to run Microsoft’s industry-defining office software on a Linux computer:

  • Use Microsoft Office on the web in a Linux browser.
  • Install Microsoft Office using Play On Linux.
  • Use Microsoft Office in a Windows virtual machine.

Please note that there is no Microsoft Office 365 for Linux. There is also no MS Office for Linux, but these methods allow you to run Microsoft Office on Linux, without the enhancements that Office 365 offers.

Use Microsoft Office in a browser

It may not be the full Microsoft Office, but what’s available through your browser is certainly good enough for a lot of office tasks. It’s an easy way to get started without paying for the full Microsoft Office suite. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook can be accessed through your browser and Microsoft account. Is your copy of Microsoft Office through an Office 365 monthly subscription? Linux users can take advantage of advanced browser-based tools that make this version of Office almost as complete as the versions for Windows, Mac, and mobile devices.

As the suite is browser based, it will not be available offline. However, you can keep things simple by setting office.live.com as a desktop shortcut. The files will be saved in the cloud and the best way to manage this is with a Microsoft OneDrive account. Without Office 365, you’ll get a simplified collection of features. Although useful in a pinch, it doesn’t do everything you’d expect.

Install Microsoft Office using Play on Linux

Do you need full Microsoft Office on Linux? You will have to install it. Now, you probably think that it is not possible to install Windows software on Linux, and to some extent that is true. Fortunately, there are other tools available to help you install Windows software like Microsoft Word on Linux, along with the rest of your office suite. The easiest way to install Microsoft Office is by using Play On Linux. The following instructions are for installing Office 365 on Ubuntu, but you’ll be able to customize this for distributions that use different package managers.

Install PlayOnLinux

Start by opening a terminal window and installing winbind.

sudo apt install winbind

This is a tool that ensures that PlayOnLinux correctly binds the Windows login to the software you are trying to install. You may also need to install cUrl and p7zip-full if they are not already installed. Next, install PlayOnLinux.

sudo apt install playonlinux

Alternatively, you can open your distribution’s app installer. On Ubuntu 20.04 LTS, use Ubuntu Software to search for Play On Linux and click Install. Wait for the installation to complete. Now all you need to do is launch Play On Linux from Menu > Applications. To install Microsoft Office, click the Office tab, then use the search field or browse the list. Please note that you will need to install the full package as there are no individual applications (apart from Project 2010 and Word Viewer and Excel Viewer) available.

You’ll notice that with each app you select under Gaming on Linux, a compatibility summary is displayed to the right. For more details on this, click on the link. A browser window will take you to Wine HQ, where you can get more information. On Linux, you’re limited to Microsoft Office 2016 as the latest version (the 32-bit version, at best). For the best and most stable results, use Microsoft Office 2016 (Method B). To do this, you will need the installation media (or ISO file) or the installation file, along with a genuine product key.

Install Microsoft Office on Ubuntu with PlayOnLinux

With the ISO file ready, click Install.

  • The Linux Playback Wizard will start and prompt you to select a DVD-ROM or installation file. Choose the appropriate option, then Next. If you are using an installation file, you will need to find where it is stored on your Linux system.
  • Click Next to continue with the installation. Once complete, Microsoft Office will be ready to run on Linux.
  • You will be able to run Microsoft Office from your desktop without separately loading Play On Linux, which will run in the background.
  • Need a feature that’s only available in the latest version of Microsoft Office? Consider Cross Over, a paid tool with a free trial that can run newer versions of Microsoft Office.
  • Installing Cross Over is easier than Play On Linux, while installing Office is similar (there is a development connection between the two tools).
  • And yes, having Windows software running effortlessly on your Linux PC is truly amazing, isn’t it? You will find that Play On Linux can support various other applications as well as many Windows games.

Install Microsoft Office 365 on Linux in a Windows virtual machine

There is another option for anyone who wants to install Microsoft Office on their Linux computer. However, this isn’t as easy as the others, unless you’re already running a Windows virtual machine. In this case, all you need to do is start your virtual machine, log in to Windows, and install Microsoft Office. Linux users can install any version of Office this way, as opposed to using Wine/Play On Linux, which can be useful for file compatibility.
