On Monday, August 2, Information Technology Services (ITS) will implement changes to Microsoft 365 licensing that impact select UNCG users. The changes simplify licensing and reduce disruptions in service experienced by University employees whose job assignments vary.
How will changes affect me?
Specific user populations get A1 or A5 license types, which provide different levels of access to Office 365 applications.
Full-time paid University employees will receive an A5 license that grants access to
- Office 365 web-based tools and desktop applications for personal devices,
- advanced tools like Power BI pro, and
- Teams Voice.
Regardless of whether an employee’s job assignment is active or in-active, the A5 license will be in effect. Previously, full-time paid employees without an active job assignment, such as faculty during the summer, experienced some loss in services.
Adjunct faculty, full-time University employees whose job classification does not require access to productivity tools, University affiliates, non-working retirees, emeritus employees, and special access accounts will receive an A1 license that grants access to Office 365 web-based tools.
Students are not impacted by these licensing changes. Students will continue to have access to desktop and web-based Office 365 applications.
Additional Information
- License exceptions granted to certain users will continue to be honored.
- Due to device-based licensing, all University account holders will continue to have access to Office 365 desktop applications on University machines running Windows.
