Tips for securing the remote job of your dreams from the experts
Before you do anything, ask yourself the same questions whether you are applying for an office-based role or one that offers WFA options.
- Am I excited about this role?
- Do the values and culture of the company match with mine?
- Are my skills relevant for the job?
- Will the company and the position give me what I want from work?
“If you’ve answered yes to the above it’s then key to remember that competition for WFA roles can be fierce,” says Jill Cotton, who is a careers expert at Glassdoor. “With a potential global talent pool you need to ensure you bring your A-game and immediately show the hiring manager why you are the right choice for the role.”
“When applying for the position, do exactly as the job advert asks,” advises Cotton. “If the company wants your CV in a particular format follow the guidelines to ensure you aren’t culled at the first step. Carefully read the job specification and ensure the skills you outline in your CV match those in the required section and ideally the desired too. If you are pivoting from another industry and don’t have direct experience clearly outline your transferable skills and what they could bring to the role.”
And even if the advert says a cover letter is optional – include it. “This is your opportunity to show your passion for the company and why you are the perfect fit,” Cotton explains.
For WFA positions, Cotton says that the hiring manager will likely want to know you have the following skills:
- Ability to work independently – “Micromanagement won’t be possible so your boss will need to be confident you have the understanding and the skills to deliver results the job requires,” says Cotton.
- Strong communication – “Frustration can quickly build if you aren’t clear and concise in the way you talk and write. Show that you are quick to build rapport with colleagues and be ready to communicate across different platforms – email, Slack, phone, video etc – throughout the day to keep connected to the team.”
- Self-motivation – “Successful WFA roles require trust and you need to be able to demonstrate that you can get your work done without the physical presence of your boss.”
- Being able to easily use online tools and digital resources – “Tools will vary from job to job but as this is the only connection you will have to your new company be sure to show you are adept to working in this way,” says Cotton.
Good luck! See you on the beach?
