Microsoft has started testing a feature called Update Stack Packages via the Windows Insider Program. The company said this feature is supposed to improve the Windows update process, but it revealed precious little else about the change.
“Through the Update Stack Package,” Microsoft said in a blog post, “we can deliver improvements to the update experience prior to the PC taking a monthly or Feature Update. The Update Stack Package will help ensure that your PC has the highest likelihood of successfully installing new updates with the best and least disruptive experience available.”
The company also said the Update Stack Package will be “limited to a very small set of update-related system files that are developed independently of the OS.” The packages will also be “delivered to Insiders through Windows Update just like builds and cumulative updates are,” Microsoft said, but they’re currently limited to the program’s Dev Channel.
That’s all Microsoft said about Update Stack Packages in its announcement. The company didn’t say if the feature would be limited to Windows 11, how it relates to the servicing stack updates already used to streamline the Windows update process, or when it’s expected to expand beyond the Dev Channel. (And, later, the Windows Insider Program writ large.)
Microsoft didn’t immediately respond to a request for more information about Update Stack Packages. Dev Channel members of the Windows Insider Program can experiment with the feature via Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22478.
